Iran chokes Internet to tighten grip on students
Iranian authorities have choked off Internet connections, in full or in part, ahead of student protests on Monday to harm the opposition’s communications. The opposition relies on the Web and cellphone service to organise rallies and get its messages out. Authorities have also told journalists working for foreign media to stay in their offices and not to cover the expected demonstrations. Iran's much put-upon opposition has been trying to maintain some momentum by staging demonstrations to coincide with state-sanctioned events. Monday's rallies are set for the day marking a 1953 killing of three students at an anti-US protest. This has been the date for pro-reform demonstrations since the 1990s. Students are protesting against what they argue was a fraudulent presidential election in June. For more, read the AP
