Death sentences for Uyghur rioters in China

A Chinese court in the Xinjiang region has sentenced five people to death for murder and other crimes in the wake of the July ethnic riots and two more were sentenced to life imprisonment. Nine people have already been executed last month for their parts in the riots in which nearly 200 people were killed. Chinese officials say most victims were Han Chinese who were attacked by ethnic Uyghurs for whom the Xinjiang is their homeland. Ethnic tensions turned into rioting in July when Uyghurs in Urumqi, the capital, protested over clashes at a factory in southern China where two Uyghurs were killed. In the ensuing rioting, 197 people were killed and about 1,700 people injured. For more, read the BBC
