Kosovo and Serbia duke it out in the World Court

Serbia has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to declare Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence a violation of international law. Serbia presented its case first and Kosovo followed. Serbia contends Kosovo is still part of its territory even as some 63 nations have already recognized Kosovo’s independence, including the US and 22 of the 27 members of the EU. However, over a 100 nations, including Russia and China, have not. The UN has yet to give recognition to Kosovo as a de jure, independent nation.  While the World Court’s ruling will not be legally binding, it is expected to have significant influence on whether nations accede to recognizing Kosovo as an independent state.
