Ghana returns hijacked Nigerian oil tanker

An oil tanker hijacked last week and intercepted by Ghana’s navy is being returned to Nigeria. There’s quite a bit of piracy off Africa’s west coast, but it’s not near the levels off Somalia in the east. Reports say all the pirates got away, but one member of the tanker’s 29 crew was found dead. According to the International Maritime Bureau, pirate attacks are rising of West Africa, with nearly 100 last year. Nigeria is among Africa’s biggest oil producers, but crime syndicates in the oil-producing Niger Delta region regularly steal the stuff. The IMB’s Live Piracy Report is a catalogue of piracy reports from around the world, but Somalia and Nigeria crop up all too often. And Africa's pirates use automatic weapons and grenades.
