Angola minister says Cabinda rebel group is dead

An Angolan government minister says the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda, a separatist group that has waged war for control of the country's oil-producing province for more than 30 years, no longer exists. He should know. Antonio Bento Bembe is a former fighter with FLEC, but is now a minister without portfolio. If true, the end of the rebel group will likely increase the flow of foreign investment into Angola's booming oil sector. More than half the country’s oil comes from wells offshore of Cabinda, which is separated from the rest of Angola by a strip of land belonging to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Angola protects foreign oil companies such as Chevron by concentrating troops there. The minster’s statements have yet to be verified. Read more: Reuters, Republic of Cabinda
