Cuckoo clocks, ja. Minarets, nein?

Swiss voters decide on Sunday whether to accept a ban on the construction of minarets, which right-wing parties claim are symbols of militant Islam on the march. If the referendum goes against minarets, it could give rise to fears of boycotts and worse from Muslim nations towards the Swiss.  Polls indicate the vote will be close. Business leaders say a ban on minarets could have a serious effect on the Swiss economy because of the number of wealthy Muslims who bank in Switzerland, buy its luxury goods and visit its resorts. Muslims form about 6% of the Swiss population and many are new immigrants from former Yugoslav republics. According to polls, less than 13% actually practice Islam. For more, read the AP
