ICC edges closer to Kenya prosecutions

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, has asked judges for approval to launch a formal investigation into Kenya's 2008 post-election violence, which killed 1,300 people and left many more homeless. The ICC, the US and EU have been trying to get Kenya's unity government (formed after the failed election) to prosecute those responsible for rape and murder, including politicians and police. Despite the US slapping a personal travel ban on Kenya's attorney general, and threats of the same for other officials, authorities have been slow to respond, and have also hedged against undertaking constitutional, legal and institutional reforms demanded by the nation's biggest donors.
