Philippines to charge mayor for massacre of 57 people
The scion of a leading family now suspected in the election massacre of 57 people in the southern Philippines turned himself in to authorities. Andal Ampatuan, a mayor, has protested his innocence, but prosecutors say he will face murder charges in the country's worst-ever election violence. Ampatuan says he had nothing to do with the ambush of the convoy that was carrying members of his rival’s family, their supporters and at least 22 journalists. His rival, Ismael Mangudadatu, had asked his family to file his candidacy for the governorship in 2010. Ampatuan is the effective head of a dynasty that controls the rural Maguindanao province on the southern island of Mindanao. For more, read the AP
