US jobless claims fall in modest sign of better times to come

One swallow doesn't make a summer, but the fact that the number of newly unemployed workers filing for unemployment benefits has dropped below half-a-million for the first time since January may be a hopeful sign. Additionally, consumer spending also rose somewhat and new home sales are at their highest point in a year according to the latest figures from the US government. However, some economists are still worried the economy may end up slipping back into recession. Analysts have noted that jobless claims have to fall to around to 400,000 for several weeks to signal actual growth in employment. For more, read the AP
