Gaddafi to mediate in Egypt-Algeria 2010 soccer row
State media say Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi (yep, the “Brotherly Leader” himself) has accepted an Arab League request to calm tensions between Egypt and Algeria after a 2010 Soccer World Cup qualifier degenerated into violence and name-calling. The two countries accuse each other of failing to protect the other’s citizens and property from attacks by rival soccer fans. The spat became so hot that Cairo withdrew its ambassador to Algiers last week, and now Algeria is demanding an explanation from Cairo. Gaddafi is currently chairman of the African Union, and as the "Brotherly Leader and Guide of the [Socialist] Revolution" in Libya since 1969, he sure should have the experience to calm down what the Arab League calls his “brotherly” neighbours. And if bloggers are to be believed, Becks, of Becks and Posh fame, could soon be playing for Gadaffi. Read more: Reuters, Thaindian News
