UK warns tourists over terror in Timbuktu

Britain is urging tourists not to visit Timbuktu in Mali because of the threat of terrorism. That’s a pity, because the exotic and remote town was an intellectual and spiritual centre for the propagation of Islam throughout Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries, and its libraries are of great historical value. Now it’s become a hiding place for militants from al-Qaeda’s North African Wing. In June, a British tourist died at the hands of one such group. Locals fear the British foreign office advisory will further damage the tourism industry, after militants kidnapped Westerners for ransom in fighting with Mali’s government.
