Mediator envisions Guinean transitional government, many don’t

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore has been chosen to mediate an end to the political crisis in Guinea, where hundreds of people were killed by the military junta which came to power in a coup last year. The junta kicked out Lansana Conte, who ruled for 25 years. Compaore, himself in power for 22 years, says junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara should lead a transitional government, with the prime minister being drawn from the opposition New Democratic Forces of Guinea. But Guinean opposition parties have unanimously rejected the proposals, as Camara may still be allowed to stand in elections scheduled for next year. Camara had earlier promised not to run in the elections, but changed his mind, causing some 50,000 people to hit the streets of the capital, Conakry, and spark an orgy of killings and rape.
