Obama to Kim – ‘We need to talk.’

US President Barack Obama called on North Korea to return to nuclear talks even as he warned of the possibility of new sanctions on Iran. Not surprisingly, North Korea's nuclear programme topped the agenda of discussions between the Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.  Obama confirmed he is sending ambassador Stephen Bosworth to North Korea on 8 December  to engage in direct talks with the North Koreans.  As Obama winds up his East Asia safari that was longer on image than it was on substantive agreements and decisions, he met US troops at the Osan air base, outside the South Korean capital. Wrapping up his trip, Obama told the troops, “one truth is clear: the security that allows families to live in peace in Asia and America, the prosperity that allows people to pursue their dreams, the freedoms and liberties that we cherish, they are not accidents of history”.  For more, read the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the VOA news
