Hillary Clinton wags finger at Afghan president Karzai

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s unannounced visit to Afghanistan took the shape of a stern talking to Afghan president-elect Hamid Karzai, urging him to do a much better job of cracking down on corruption – one of the reasons the security situation continues to decline in Afghanistan. Karzai, about to be sworn in for a new term as president, won the election despite charges of major ballot stuffing and other problems. Clinton took a quick detour from US President Barack Obama’s East Asia trip to come to Kabul. The US administration is increasingly worried that others in the Karzai administration are involved in the opium trade as well as a range of corrupt activities. For more, read the New York Times
