Firestorm over Obama’s bow to Japanese emperor

The right-wing is at it again as their favourite commentators all denounce Obama's deep bow to Japan's Emperor Akihito as grovelling to “one of them there furriners”. The rest of the media has seized upon this “storm in a tea cup” to ramble through musty protocol guides to find out. The verdict: not guilty, especially since there are photos of Bush and Nixon doing pretty much the same thing. Obama’s real mistakes seem to have been shaking hands and bowing simultaneously – and in being much taller than the emperor so that he had to bend down to do his greeting anyway.
