Illegal DRC gold feeding bloody conflict

The Kimberley Process is an organisation that regulates trade in “blood diamonds”, but maybe a “Johannesburg Process” is needed for “blood gold”. The UN says sanction busters are smuggling 40 tonnes of gold annually out of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with rebel groups in the lawless country using the proceeds to buy arms. Most gold is shipped to Dubai via a neighbouring state, according to the BBC. A recent Congolese Senate report said the gold was worth about $1.24 billion on a yearly basis. That’s a lot of AK-47s.
