Lou Dobbs, last of the CNN originals, leaves the nest

The last original CNN host, Lou Dobbs, quit his nightly business news show, effective immediately, on Wednesday.  He says he is moving to new opportunities, whatever they are, and told viewers he would help lead a national conversation to restore “inspiration to our great free society and our market economy,” whatever that means. In the past several years Dobbs has become a focal point for critics as he pivoted from business journalist to highly opinionated commentator on immigration. He joined CNN in 1980, even before it had become the key news source for travellers around the world. His business show became enormously influential in corporate circles – and highly profitable for CNN. But Dobbs says his worldview changed after 9/11 and various corporate scandals. Thereafter, he began to offer his opinions on everything much more sharply, and most especially on immigration, provoking a strong backlash from Latino interest groups.  Then, inexplicably, Dobbs became a prominent supporter of the so-called “birther” movement, whose article of faith is that Barack Obama was not a US citizen by birth and thus ineligible to be president.
