Bennett’s lawyers want judge to stand down

A Zimbabwe High Court judge has been asked to stand down in the terrorism trial of Movement for Democratic Change treasurer-general Roy Bennett. Bennett’s defence team believes that comments made by Judge Chinembiri Bhunu in a bail application by the state's star witness in 2006 would be prejudicial to the accused. Bhunu has also allowed a man who was tortured to give evidence against Bennett. A former white farmer, Bennett is an ally of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, and was due to have been sworn in as deputy agriculture minister before his arrest on charges of possessing weapons, banditry and insurgency, which carry the death penalty.
