Girlfriend arrested after Ugandan army chief beaten to death

A former Ugandan army chief died at his girlfriend's flat in the capital, Kampala, after being hit on the head with an iron bar. Sacked as army chief in 2003 after the UN accused him of plundering resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo while leading military operations there, James Kazini had been a victim of domestic violence according to police – who promptly arrested his lover. In 2008 he was found guilty of corruption on charges unconnected to the Congo debacle, and was facing further charges of subversion at the time of his death. Read more: BBC
