Dalai Lama visits monastery in disputed region

The Dalai Lama is visiting the Tawang monastery in northeast Arunachal Pradesh for a week, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s holiest sites, in spite of objections from China. China claims much of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory. The Dalai Lama was welcomed by thousands of fellow-religious adherents as he made his way to open a museum. Responding to media queries about Chinese criticism, he said, “That's quite usual wherever I go.” The Indian government barred foreign media (but not Indian citizens) from entering Arunachal Pradesh to cover the visit. The Chinese claim extends back to 1947 when they rejected the 1914 boundary defined by the UK. In 1962, the Chinese army reached deeply into this territory during the India-China border war.
