Ecstasy in the Bronx! Yankees win title no. 27
There is no joy in “the city of brotherly love”. But in New York they are celebrating as the Yankees overtook the Philadelphia Phillies four games to two to win their 27th World Series championship. Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night. Riding on the back of its stars Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Derek Jeter, its pitching from CC Sabbathia and Andy Pettitte, and, above all, its relief pitching in the form of Mariano Rivera, the Yankees outplayed last year's World Series champs. Chase Utley of the Phillies tied a long-standing World Series record for home runs first set by the Yankees' "Mr October", Reggie Jackson. Hideki Matsui was playing in what may have been his final game with the Yankees where he had been a star since coming to them after establishing himself with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. He had a huge Series, going 8 for 13 (.615) with three homers and eight RBIs. His go-ahead shot off an effective Martinez in Game 2 helped the Yankees tie it 1-all.Read more: New York Times, AP and every other newspaper in America
