ICC steps in over Kenya’s deadly election

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is to request that ICC judges open an investigation into Kenya's 2007 post-election violence, which killed about 1,300 people and left tens of thousands homeless. Politicians, including cabinet ministers, are suspected of fomenting the violence. The ICC’s Luis Moreno-Ocampo met Kenya's president and prime minister, who represent different parties in a fragile unity government. Both said they would cooperate with the investigation. The chief prosecutor said he considered the killings to be a crime against humanity. The US has recently barred Kenya’s attorney general for not aggressively prosecuting those involved in the violence. Read more: BBC, AP
