Tribal conflict adds to DRC woes

Tribal conflict over farming and fishing rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen nearly 50 policemen killed in the past few days in the north-east of the country. The fighting is not related to a UN-backed government offensive against Rwandan rebels in the east, where most of the UN’s 18,000 peacekeepers are based. Thousands of people fleeing the violence in the north have crossed into the neighbouring Republic of Congo in past days, with reports saying 13,000 people have now taken refuge there. Another branch of the UN, its refugee agency, is assisting those displaced by the fighting.Read more: Reuters
