Sudan president off to Turkey despite ICC arrest warrant

Despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant hanging over his head for war crimes in Darfur, Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will visit Turkey next week in a test of international justice. Turkey, a largely Muslim country, has not ratified the statute that established the ICC, but is anxious to gain entry to the European Union, that does support the court. Last week, an African Union summit in Nigeria discussed recommendations on the Darfur conflict, where al-Bashir was noticeably absent, despite a formal invitation from Nigeria’s president. Nigeria is a signatory to the ICC, along with many AU member countries. But the AU has declared it will not cooperate over al-Bashir’s arrest warrant. Go figure. Read more: Reuters, VOA, France 24
