Rwanda claims Tanzania court not sticking to genocide prisoner transfer

Rwanda says the UN genocide court in Tanzania has gone back on a promise to transfer convicts to serve the remainder of their sentences at home. Genocide suspects have been tried by both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, and Freetown’s UN Special Court for Sierra Leone, with the latter sending prisoners back to Rwandan jails. Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered by Hutu militias within three months in the 1994 genocide. Established the same year, the ICTR in Arusha has convicted 38 people and acquitted six. Convicted prisoners are considered international convicts, and are held in countries as diverse as Rwanda, Italy, Benin, Swaziland, France, Sweden and Mali. The ICTR says the decision on where to house prisoners lies with the court. Read more: Reuters
