Frelimo set to rout opposition in elections

As expected, Mozambique's ruling Frelimo party is cruising to victory in national elections. Figures based on 72% of the vote show Frelimo will get 192 seats in the 250-member parliament, opposition Renamo 48 seats and new party the Mozambique Democratic Movement eight seats. Pollsters reckon Renamo’s Afonso Dhlakama will get 15% of the presidential vote, while Davis Simango, who heads up the new MDM, is expected to get 10%. Something is changing in the overall balance of power, but a win for Frelimo allows it to change the constitution so that current president Armando Guebuza (photo) can run for a third term in office. That should make the elections in five year’s time far more interesting, especially as the MDC was only allowed to run in four of 13 constituencies after a row over election lists.
