Clinton calls on Israel to reply positively to Palestinian actions

Attending a G-8 /Middle East foreign ministers’ meeting, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton pointed to Palestinian steps to improve security and said such efforts needed to be reciprocated by Israel. Earlier, Clinton had angered Palestinian leaders with praise for an Israeli offer to limit expansion of Jewish settlements. This time around the Israelis will probably be in a lather instead. Clinton’s earlier positive words about Israeli moves brought condemnation from Palestinian and other Arab leaders who believe the Obama administration is allowing Israel to slide around the 2003 accord that calls for the halt of all settlement activity and condoning continued settlement expansion. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he’s not coming back to talks with Israel until that country agrees to a complete halt to the settlements. Read more: VOA
