BP gets fined $87.4 million for “death trap” refinery

UK energy behemoth BP was hit by the enormous fine after it was found lacking in addressing safety issues at its Texas City refinery, even after a 2005 explosion that killed 15 workers. The fine is four times bigger than any other before levied by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. BP has already said it will challenge all 709 “alleged violations and proposed penalties” (another record, probably), claiming it has already spent $1 billion addressing safety concerns. Of course, it beggs the question: how much of a death trap was this place before 2005 if $1 billion is not enough to fix it?
