Tsvangirai invitation to UN torture rapporteur cuts no ice

Seems an invitation from Morgan Tsvangirai doesn’t cut it in Zimbabwe, especially when Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF plays one international body off against another. UN torture investigator Manfred Nowak returned to South Africa after being detained in Harare and told he had no clearance to visit. Nowak was supposed on be on a week-long fact-finding mission of the country’s police stations and prisons. He blamed his treatment on the “disengagement” from the unity government by Tsvangirai’s MDC party, after one of their senior officials was arrested and charged with terrorism. Trouble is, the International Monetary Fund has just praised the unity government's improved economic policies, so Zanu-PF took a mile for another inch of progress. Read more: BBC, Times Online UK
