Rebels say Darfur atrocities must be tried by International Criminal Court

The Justice and Equality Movement, Darfur’s biggest rebel group, wants atrocities there to be tried by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This comes as it rejected an African Union report on solving the six-year conflict in Darfur, which has killed 300,000 people and displaced millions. The AU report was conducted by a panel of so-called African "wise men", headed by our own Thabo Mbeki. It recommends the establishment of a special Darfur court, including foreign judges, to assess what the US has called systematic genocide. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir over what it calls war crimes in Darfur. Read more: Reuters
