Sudanese parties walk out of parliament
Sudan's opposition parties walked out of parliament after the ruling National Congress Party refused to back down over plans to allow the intelligence service to retain wide powers of search and arrest. The walkout comes in the run-up to a 2010 election, which may see the oil-rich south of the country vote on secession by 2011. But security forces were blamed for torture and murder during a 21-year north-south civil war. A 2005 peace deal to end the conflict included a new democratic constitution, which limited the powers of the intelligence service. Now, old wounds are being reopened by the ruling party.Read more: Reuters
