Mugabe’s mob poles apart from MDC after ‘disengagement’
It’s not getting better in Zimbabwe, it’s getting worse, despite the hopes that accompanied the formation of a unity government earlier this year. Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF and its rival the Movement for Democratic Change are poles apart after the first meeting between Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, since his party boycotted the unity government over the arrest of white farmer and MDC member, Roy Bennett, on terrorism charges. Western donors will now further delay billions of dollars in aid and trade - money that is vital if Zimbabwe is to pull out of its spiralling economic crisis. Mugabe’s mob remains cynical and violent, but the MDC says it will now wait for the outcome of mediation by the Southern African Development Community and, if this fails, the party will start to prepare for elections, because there is no alternative to continuing the political process.
