Niger president wins disputed election

The Niger election commission says the party of President Mamadou Tandja has won 76 of the 113 seats in parliament after an election boycotted by the main opposition. The boycott came after Tandja changed the constitution allowing him to stand for a third term. A dozen independents have won seats in parliament for the first time, despite the poll attracting international condemnation. Tandja earlier dissolved parliament and the constitutional court when they refused to allow him to change the constitution. West African trade bloc Ecowas suspended Niger's membership after the president refused to delay the election. Read more: BBC, BBC, Reuters Africa
