Judicial Service Commission rips into aspirant high judges


The JSC made itself pretty popular by effectively throwing out John Hlope's nomination to the Constitutional Court, against all expectations. Could it turn out to be the institution that keeps the judicial service honest? To judge by its interviews of possible Gauteng High Court judges on Tuesday, the answer is yes. Business Day reports that interviewee Mahomed Ismail was caught out in an effort to polish his CV by joining the Black Lawyers' Association without taking part in the organisation. Sita Kolbe got her turn when she used Jacob Zuma to illustrate a point about black advocates, and got smacked down for her trouble. We were getting a little worried about the sudden outbreak of peace and love between judges and the executive, but clearly there is one body that still believes in an adversarial role.
