Insurgents attack Pakistani university

Two explosions, apparently triggered by suicide bombers, at an Islamic university in Islamabad killed at least five people. Security measures in Islamabad had already been tightened after a series of suicide bombings across the country in the past several weeks and in anticipation of the Pakistani military offensive in the north-western tribal region of South Waziristan. But targeting a university that provides an Islamic-based education has surprised observers. An International Islamic University spokesman said they had received no threats. Pakistani interior minister Rehman Malik said, “Students from 47 Muslim countries are studying here. To attack here is to tell the Muslims of the world that Pakistan is not safe for anyone.” Officials said one suicide bomber detonated explosives hidden in his jacket while trying to enter the women’s cafeteria. The second hit the male campus, shattering glass over a wide area.
