US renews sanctions against Sudan, but with incentives
The US will renew economic sanctions against Sudan over what it calls “genocide” in Darfur, where hundreds of thousands of people have died in fighting over the years. But at the same time it’s offering Khartoum new incentives to end the conflict. The Obama administration also wants to ensure implementation of a 2005 peace deal between the Islamic north and the Christian and animist south of the country, in the lead-up to a vote on secession for the south in 2011. It hopes to prevent Sudan from becoming a haven for international terror groups, who operate with impunity in nearby Somalia and neighbouring Eritrea. Sudan’s response to the proposals has been lukewarm. The International Criminal Court, of which the US is not a member, has issued an arrest warrant for the country’s President Omar al Bashir for war crimes in Darfur. Read more: Reuters, ICC
