Somali militants claim to have downed a US drone

Militants from the radical Somali al Shabaab group say they have shot down a US drone aircraft flying over Somalia’s southern port of Kismayu, which they hold. Last month, a US helicopter attack killed a senior al-Qaeda suspect said to have links to al Shabaab, prompting a deadly twin suicide bombing of African Union headquarters in the country’s capital, Mogadishu. The rebels say they think the drone flew into the ocean, but the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain claims all its unmanned aerial vehicles have returned safely. One thing is for sure, Somalia has become the third pillar in the US war on terror, after Iraq and Afghanistan. Read more: Reuters
