Saving roads (and Transnet) by banning trucks

Details are still somewhat sketchy, but it looks as if the department of transport is planning to kill two flies with one blow: shore up Spoornet’s struggling freight rail business, and reduce road maintenance costs. The problem is it wants to do so at the cost of trucking companies – so say the trucking companies. Road freighters have been informed of a planned prohibition that would reduce the weight of goods which trucks will be allowed to carry on any road that isn’t designated national, such as the N1 or N3, by a little more than 11%. Bulk commodity transport, such as coal, would be especially hard hit. Read more: Business Report
