Amazon Kindle 2 launches in SA, offers 230,000 ebooks

The global leader in the race to capture e-reader market is here.

The Amazon Kindle is now officially on sale to South Africans, although you still have to order them from the US, pay in dollars and settle local taxes yourself. More than 60% of the books available to American consumers can now be bought here. TechCentral reports that the device, which should cost somewhere north of R3,000 (that’s a lot of Mills & Boon) after taxes and shipping, will also provide local readers with newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, though no local papers are available yet.
