Ecowas slaps arms embargo on Guinea

West Africa’s regional economic body Ecowas has imposed an arms embargo on Guinea after troops killed about 200 demonstrators in the capital, Conakry, last month. The bloc has accused Guinea’s leaders of mass human rights violations after troops shot and raped civilians when some 50,000 people took to the streets to protest coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara’s intention to run in presidential elections in January. Camara has now postponed his decision after the African Union gave him until Saturday to say he would not run. The 15-member Ecowas group says Guinea poses a threat to regional peace, security and stability.Read more: Reuters, BBC
