Uganda MP wants death sentence for gay sex

It must be election time again in Uganda. Seems the favourite pastime of politicians is calling an opponent homosexual. Think back to Zimbabwe’s Canaan Banana and even the utterings of our own Jacob Zuma. Now a Ugandan MP has proposed creating the offence of "aggravated homosexuality", which will see the death penalty imposed on those who have gay sex with disabled people, those under 18, and when the accused is HIV-positive. Recently, a former senior Ugandan UN official accused President Yoweri Museveni of trying to discredit him among the country's electorate by inferring he was gay. The president said the same about Kizza Besigye, Uganda’s most prominent opposition leader, who challenged Museveni in 2001 and 2006 elections. Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda, and word has it that the bill has a good chance of being passed as senior figures from the ruling party are likely to back it.
