Brits to give Zim unity govt $100 million

Shortly after the highest-ranking EU delegation in seven years visited Zimbabwe and said it wouldn’t lift sanctions against Mugabe and his cronies, Britain said it would provide $100 million in aid - its largest ever donation to the cash-strapped country. The former colonial master says it wants to help the new unity government and ease the grim humanitarian situation. The British expect the money to be used to restore services such as water, sanitation, healthcare and education, and provide food aid, seed and fertilisers to poor households. The Norwegians might have helped, too, had the Nobel Peace Prize been awarded to Mugabe’s opponent in the unity government, Morgan Tsvangirai, rather than US President Barack Obama. After all, the good things in Zimbabwe need highlighting, while the bad (Mugabe and co.) need to be held to account.
