Clinton and Gates to be dynamic duo in Afghan debate
US secretary of state Hillary Clinton and secretary of defence Robert Gates were previously a one-two punch in support of the ambitious effort in Afghanistan. Now, as the Obama team heads into a new debate on whether to send in more troops, consolidate forces or focus on Pakistan, the pair will be the crucial voting bloc in favour of a more ambitious approach. That could set them in opposition to both the vice president as well as Obama’s general in Afghanistan. Given the weight Obama gives to Gates’ opinions, the pairing of Clinton and Gates may be the critical mass in swaying the president and,in the surprisingly public debate, that will determine the future course of the war.
