Conakry coup leaders sign huge oil and mining deal with Chinese

Guinea says its military rulers have agreed to a huge mining and oil deal with China, despite the killing of up to 200 people after mass demonstrations in the capital, Conakry, a few weeks ago. The Chinese will invest more than $7 billion in infrastructure in return for being a strategic partner in all mining projects in the mineral-rich country. While China is doing the same kind of deals across Africa, the fact that it didn’t blink after the killings by the military lends credence to grave misgivings in the West over China’s position on human rights.
