He has edited magazines on business and politics, technology, and wildlife. He has also published fiction and non-fiction books, most of them in Serbian. Though he has never pretended to be a reporter, his wide knowledge of politics (especially in America), combined with his experiences in a disintegrating Yugoslavia, gives him an unusual outlook on events in South Africa.

Despite the vowel-poor surname, he tells anyone who asks that he hails from Hyde Park, Johannesburg, having spent most of his adult life in South Africa.

He’s the man who steered South Africa to fiscal responsibility, then through the global financial crisis. He stole the hearts and minds of investors and analysts across the world. And he has feet of clay. The Democratic Alliance yesterday delivered one of its parliamentary hand-grenade questions, from which we learn that Trevor Manuel spent R1.2 million in tax money on a BMW 750i. Has he ever made a telephone call from the back seat of that car urging some government official to impose austerity measures, or cautioned a union not to ask for a salary increase of R100 a month per head? We can only wonder.
