Mother of US envoy murdered in Sudan gets death penalty for killers

Four Sudanese men on trial for shooting dead a US envoy and his Sudanese driver have been sentenced to death in the capital, Khartoum. The convicted men say their confessions were extracted under torture. The mother of the slain man, John Granville, formally demanded the death penalty under Sudan's Islamic law, which allows the family of a murder victim to either request the death penalty, forgive the killers or ask for compensation. A death sentence had been passed earlier this year, but some members of the driver’s family pardoned the killers, leading to the upholding of the verdict on appeal.
