Kenyans arrest American ‘Muslim’ at Somali border

Police arrested an American man in northern Kenya who was trying to enter an area of Somalia controlled by Islamist militants. Although the man claimed to be a Muslim, they thought his willingness to travel among the radical al Shabab group was suspicious. He denied any connection to Islamic groups, but the US believes al Shabab is a proxy for al-Qaeda. The Kenyans and Somalians are jumpy and conflicted neighbours. Al Shabab has accused Kenya of training pro-Somali government militants to fight it and its allies in the southern port town of Kismayo, and claim the Kenyans operate three training camps close to the Somali border.
