Comair goes for vertical integration, eyes Durban International

Kulula.com parent and British Airways franchise-holder, Comair has confirmed its interest in buying the Durban International Airport once that is superseded by the out-of-town alternative under construction by the Airports Company of SA. Sake24 reports it wants to do so in partnership with the owners of Lanseria Airport outside Johannesburg, from which Comair offers flights. Gidon Novick of Comair has been scathing in his criticism of the under-construction King Shaka International Airport, saying Durban International will be big enough to handle all traffic for the city for years to come. The company has also been publicly unhappy for a long time with the fees it pays Acsa and keen to emulate European carriers who save costs by using secondary airports.
