Chad oil pipeline threatens villages, draws activists’ anger

Human rights activists in Chad say a Chinese-backed 300 kilometre oil pipeline will destroy at least 10 villages, displacing hundreds of people. The government promises the villagers will be compensated, despite ongoing controversy over whether there were proper consultations in the first place and doubts over the veracity of an environmental impact study. The World Bank withdrew its support from the project last year saying government had not followed the original agreements. Now activists say the deal is directly between the Chadian government and China National Petroleum Corp, and worry about the lack of international oversight.
