Indian Embassy the target this time in Kabul

In the second attack on the Indian Embassy compound in two years, a car filled with explosives exploded, killing a dozen people. Afghan sources raised the death toll to 17, with 82 wounded. “The suicide bomber was directed against the embassy,” India’s foreign secretary said in New Delhi. American intelligence sources said the blast had the hallmarks of the July 2008 blast that killed 54 people and which those sources said had received Pakistan intelligence agency help. According to the Associated Press, a Taliban spokesman said his group had carried out the attack, although the Taliban here are a set of related insurgencies that criss-cross regions and countries, and it was unclear which specific group was responsible. American officials believe Jalaluddin Haqqani, the commander who battled the Russians in the 1980s and who has a long and complicated relationship with the CIA, was responsible for the 2008 attack. The latest bombing comes at a sensitive moment as President Barack Obama is deciding whether to increase US troop levels in Afghanistan.
